Publisher’s note
BELLBOY was published the old-fashioned way in the last century, in 1990, with pre-publication reviews; dealings with book wholesalers; millions of telephone calls and letters; and typesetting, illustration editing and page layout accomplished on almost the very first Macintosh models. It was a VERY long voyage.
I undertook the illustration and production of the book because my first reading of the manuscript showed me a creation that had to be published—and because I owned an entity impressively named New Mexico Publishing Company, (which started out doing local guides and cards) and which I knew would publish the book. The manuscript, as good as it is, and the illustrations weren’t worth the trouble if we couldn’t get a publisher, a challenge in itself.
Now that publishing—which is publicizing—has metamorphosed, with lightning-quick computers and relatively instant communication, BELLBOY can be found by readers who are interested in the subject matter, or who know or are fortunate to live in the region the book shows so well, and not least by those who are related to the subjects of this history.
